Surprise: that Scarface remake is still happening. In the latest development, director Antoine Fuqua is now back in talks to helm the long-discussed film.
Deadline reports that Fuqua and Universal Pictures are once again in negotiations about the new version of the classic gangster film and apparently he plans to stick around this time. Scarface was meant to premiere on Aug. 10, 2018, but is now undated as the studio figures out its next steps. Diego Luna was previously in talks to play the lead role, but the Rogue One star is currently unsure if he will return to the project as the new production timeline can cause possible scheduling conflicts.
Fuqua was attached to the film in 2016, but he later backed out the following year when Sony and Denzel Washington wanted to created a sequel to 2014’s The Equalizer very quickly. They needed Fuqua back on set since he was already developing the script (that film is slated for a July 20, 2018 release). When Fuqua exited, David Ayer was brought on to direct Scarface, but he too had to leave the project. This was around the time he was working on the panned Suicide Squad and Bright films.
Not sure if I’m here for a remake to a classic of this caliber. The original has beyond amazing acting from every single character down to the extras, not sure if even casting the hottest stars in #1 Box Office films could deliver it better then the original. I applaud Mr. Antoine Fuqua he does amazing work, I just don’t think this is a film that should be touched by anyone. Its a timeless film and the Cuban refugee Tony Montana played by Al Pacino can’t compare, and may make it ver difficult for a remake to bring him to life in a way that Al Pacino he did.
But hey who knows, I thought the Joker and Batman shouldn’t be touched but Heath Ledger killed the role. Sometimes you feel if it’s not broke do not fix it.
